CHALLANGE

In a complex world, were organizations, companies and individuals are fighting for the same government funds, charity/NGO contributions and not working together, we need to create something that can disrupt that model and show a new way of working.

SUMMARY

Surpisingly good helps organizations, companies and individuals respond to complex challenges and find new creative solutions. Bringing people together with workshop tools, labs and facilitation.
Simply put, we enjoy coming up with new ways of doing things and helping others do the same.

As head of product for Surprisingly Good I'm in charge for all the branding and visual design but also helps out facilitate and design workshops and labs.

Our network is a group of diverse people from different backgrounds from artists to activists who believes that the work we do today has the potential to live through generations in a sustainable, ever-growing way; we see design as something that shapes lives. It's not just an approach to problem-solving.

NYU Social lab:

Many of the systems that impact population health and wellbeing (e.g. health, finance, education and food) are unfair, unstable, and unsustainable, resulting in a host of complex challenges.  While some of New Yorks neighborhoods are getting healthier, low income neighborhoods like Brownsville in Brooklyn has one of the lowest health rates in the country. We wanted to see what we could do to change that and involve the community that lost trust in their city.

We invited artists, designers, local government, businesses,NGO's, activists, teachers, doctors, developers, farmers, academics, youths, students, homeless people, local leaders and residents of Brownsville to find a solution for the vast health decline of the neighborhood.

STARTING OFF

How can we leverage existing resources to to improve access to healthy foods in our neighborhoods? We started out by showing everyone in the room that they have a lot in common, but also a lot of different competenses and unique skillsets. Introduced them to what a social lab really is and why its important with collaboration.

LAB/WORKSHOP

We introduced a number of different tools and workshop techniques, like Social Safari, Reflection, Jobs to be done, Creative playground, Rapid prototyping etc. The main goal here was for everyone to participate and come up with as many ideas as possible before we wanted to start thinking about solutions.

CREATE SOLUTIONS

The participants got to share all their insights and thoughts around the ideas they been discussing and working with, then putting everything up on the wall for everyone to see and add to, showing how simple it could be to share ideas and add to each others ideas. Then we went back to the problem and had all the groups work and later present their solutions to each other.
